Rath Yatra: Gajapati Maharaja's 'Chhera Pahanra' ritual
At this year's Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingha Deb arrived in classic royal style—white attire, silver palanquin—and performed the traditional 'Chhera Pahanra' ritual.
Using a golden-handled broom, he swept the chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings, carrying out his special royal duty that kicks off the festival.
Highlights of the ritual
The Maharaja also led aarti and Chamer seva as Sanskrit chants and flower offerings filled the air.
Once he finishes sweeping, wooden horses are attached so devotees can pull the chariots through the streets—a tradition meant to show that everyone is equal before Lord Jagannath.
Dating back to 12th-century Odisha, 'Chhera Pahanra' stands for unity and respect for all, with the Maharaja's role highlighting his deep connection to these age-old customs.
