Ravada Chandrasekhar appointed as Kerala's new Police Chief

Kerala has picked Ravada A. Chandrasekhar as its new Director General of Police (DGP), filling the spot left by Shaik Darvesh Saheb, who just retired.
The decision came from the state Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, after reviewing candidates recommended by the UPSC.

TL;DR

Controversy over police firing incident

Chandrasekhar's appointment has sparked debate because of his involvement in the 1994 Koothuparamba police firing, which led to five deaths.
He faced murder charges back then, but those were dropped by the Kerala High Court in 2012.
Some political leaders raised concerns, but the government insists he was chosen on merit.

A look at his career

He's a 1991-batch IPS officer from Andhra Pradesh who started his career in Kerala as an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Over three decades, he's worked across several districts and even held a top role at the Intelligence Bureau.
His deep experience with Kerala's policing and intelligence work made him stand out for this role.

Chandrasekhar will take charge soon

Chandrasekhar will take charge soon for what's expected to be a two-year term.
Until he officially steps in, ADGP H Venkatesh is handling things as acting DGP.
