SC on stubble burning: Farmers might be fooling satellite checks
The Supreme Court is looking into claims that some farmers are outsmarting satellite checks to keep burning crop stubble, contributing to Delhi's already-bad air quality.
Chief Justice B.R. Gavai wasn't fully convinced by the argument, but amicus curiae Aparajita Singh pointed to data posted online by a NASA scientist showing that stubble burning hasn't really gone down.
Court to review progress on November 17
The court has asked Punjab and Haryana for fresh updates on stubble burning incidents, since earlier efforts haven't worked well.
Singh and others also suggested stricter pollution controls in Delhi-NCR—moving from GRAP III to GRAP IV—which would mean tighter rules on construction and other activities if the air keeps getting worse.
The court will review all this again on November 17.
