Spencer's Retail Hyderabad ordered to refund ₹80 and pay ₹6,000
India
Spencer's Retail in Hyderabad got ordered to refund the ₹80 excess after charging a customer ₹80 extra for two whiskey bottles, and the commission awarded ₹5,000 as compensation plus ₹1,000 toward litigation costs.
Even though the bottles had an MRP of ₹1,000 each, the store sold them at ₹1,040 apiece on June 4, 2025.
Consumer court rejects retailer's duty claim
The store tried to justify the price hike by blaming revised excise duties, but the store allegedly told him the prices had been revised, but the new rates had not yet been printed on the bottles.
The consumer court didn't buy it. Spencer's was ordered to refund the extra amount and pay up for unfair trade practices.
Similar cases have popped up elsewhere too, reminding retailers that MRP rules are serious business.
