Supreme Court asks FSSAI to detail food warning label specifics
The Supreme Court has asked FSSAI to explain exactly how their new front-of-pack food warning labels will work.
Justices J B Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran want specifics about the label's size, color, shape, where it'll go on the packaging, and when it'll actually roll out.
Even though FSSAI has made some progress, the court feels there are still practical details missing.
FSSAI plans phased red hexagon warnings
FSSAI plans to use a red hexagonal warning in Phase I for products high in two or more nutrients of concern, added fat, added sugar and salt, with Phase II extending it to products high in any one of those nutrients.
They're also curious why "added" nutrients are flagged instead of total amounts and why one combined warning is used instead of separate ones for each nutrient.
FSSAI now has 10 days to answer these questions before the next hearing on September 28.
