Supreme Court denies self-styled godman Asaram interim bail, allows caregiver
India
The Supreme Court has denied interim bail to 85-year-old self-styled godman Asaram, who is serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting a minor back in 2013.
While he will not be released, the court did allow him to engage a trained caretaker of his choice for round-the-clock assistance after experts from AIIMS suggested he did not need hospitalization but should get continuous medical care.
Asaram bail pending, could be reconsidered
Asaram's request for bail is still technically pending and could be reconsidered if his health gets worse.
Previously, he had gotten short-term parole, and the Rajasthan High Court recently upheld his conviction and life sentence.
The case goes back to an incident at his ashram.
