Supreme Court: OBC reservations not retroactive to past appointments
India
The Supreme Court has clarified that its recent order on Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations will not be applied to the past, so if you got a job before the March 11 judgment (i.e., appointments made before March 11, 2026), nothing changes for you.
This move came after the government pointed out that changing old appointments could cause major confusion.
Court upholds post based OBC criteria
Going forward, the court's March decision stands: OBC candidates cannot be denied reservation just because their parents earn above a certain salary.
The focus is now on post-based criteria instead of parental income.
So, the 2025 civil services examination, which was ongoing when the March judgment was pronounced, will follow these updated rules.
