For the second year in a row, Indore and Bhopal have retained their position as the top two cleanest cities in India, followed by Chandigarh. Several other cities were given the honors too. The Swachh Survekshan sanitation survey, which took the feedback of 37.66 lakh citizens across 4,203 municipality areas in the country, was conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The three parts of the survey

"The on-field survey for Swachh Survekshan has been conducted by an independent agency and the data for ranking of the cities has been collected from three sources - service level progress, direct observation by random field visits, and...citizen feedback," explained an official.

The conclusions of the Swachh Survekshan 2018

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Housing and Urban Affairs minister, announced the results on Wednesday. The survey concluded that Great Mumbai was the cleanest capital, Vijayawada was the cleanest big city, Mysore was the cleanest medium city, and the New Delhi Municipality Corporation (NDMC) was the cleanest city among municipal bodies with population less than three lakh. Delhi Cantonment was named the cleanest cantonment.

A bit about the Swachh Survekshan survey

The Swachh Survekshan survey was launched in 2016 "as a prelude to encouraging cities to improve urban sanitation" and falls under the government's Swachh Bharat-Urban scheme. The survey covered only 73 municipal areas with populations above one lakh in 2016, and in 2017, grew to cover 434 municipal areas with one lakh plus population. The 2018 survey covered 4,203 such areas.
