Tamil Nadu: Sons murder father with snakebites for insurance money

India

In Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, two brothers—Mohanraj and Hariharan—have been arrested for allegedly murdering their 56-year-old father, E P Ganesan, using snakebites.
Their motive? To claim ₹3 crore from 11 life insurance policies taken out in his name.
The plan started a week before the murder, with an initial failed attempt using a cobra.
A week later, they used a highly venomous snake—identified in police accounts as a krait or Russell's viper—to bite their father while he slept and delayed taking him to the hospital, making it look like an accident.

How the police cracked the case

The case took a turn when insurers noticed something off about the recent high-value policies.
Police dug into phone records and transactions, discovering that Mohanraj had paid ₹1.5 lakh for the operation, which included procuring the snake and carrying out the murder.
Within 10 days, all six people involved—including those who helped source the snake—were arrested and key evidence was seized.
Everyone is now in judicial custody as the investigation continues.
