Tamil Nadu unveils 2026-27 budget showing ₹55,775-cr revenue deficit

Tamil Nadu just dropped its 2026-27 budget, and the numbers are pretty bold: ₹4,72,585 crore planned for spending, but only ₹3,50,766 crore expected in receipts. That leaves a revenue deficit of ₹55,775 crore.
Finance Secretary M A Siddique made it clear: the main challenge is making sure revenue grows faster than debt.
Tamil Nadu raises ₹2,000-cr toward ₹15,000-cr
Debt is still rising, though Siddique said things have stabilized a bit over the last three months.
The state has raised ₹2,000 crore so far toward its ₹15,000 crore revenue target (₹1,500 crore of that from liquor sales)!
GST income is expected to jump by 12%, and taxes from alcohol are set to climb too.
Even with money tight, Siddique stood by welfare spending as an investment in people and social progress.
