Heavy rain hits Delhi-NCR; IMD warns of thunderstorms, lightning

Heavy rainfall hit parts of the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday morning, resulting in traffic snarls and fears of waterlogging. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rains during the day. Intense showers were witnessed in South Delhi and adjoining areas. The IMD issued a red alert for some districts, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 40km/h.

Rainfall warning in Delhi
The IMD's advisory highlighted that heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely at isolated places in South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, and New Delhi.
Moderate rain with similar conditions is likely at many places in Central and West Delhi.
Scattered heavy rains are also expected over the next two hours in Ghaziabad, East Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, among other areas.
Monsoon update
Monsoon activity to continue in Delhi-NCR
The weather forecast for Delhi-NCR indicates that the monsoon activity will continue with cloudy skies and thundershowers at some places.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rains in Uttarakhand, Odisha, and Telangana on Monday.
Odisha is likely to witness intense showers along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Despite the rain, weather conditions are expected to remain hot and humid after the showers subside.

Delhi recorded light rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30am on Monday.
Safdarjung recorded 3.4mm of rain, Palam received 10.6mm while Lodhi Road saw a rainfall of 2.7mm during this period.
The weather outlook has advised residents in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram to remain prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions, especially while traveling during a spell of rain.
