Tragic electrocution claims elephant lives in Karnataka

India

A female elephant and her calf lost their lives after coming into contact with a snapped live electric wire at a coffee estate in Sakleshpur, Hassan district. Heavy rains and gusty winds caused the wire to fall, leading to this tragic incident. With these deaths, Karnataka has now seen 13 elephants die this year—six from electrocution.

The Forest Department has filed a complaint against the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESCOM) for not maintaining power lines properly—a problem that's led to 51 elephant deaths by electrocution in Karnataka since 2021. In response, the High Court has told forest officials to team up with power boards and form area-specific committees to fix and monitor vulnerable power lines so more animals aren't harmed in the future.
