Tragic journey: Man denied ambulance carries newborn's body
In Maharashtra's Palghar district, a tribal couple went through a heartbreaking experience with the rural healthcare system.
When Avita Kavar went into labor on June 11, no ambulance showed up despite repeated calls.
Forced to arrange their own ride, they reached Khodala Public Health Centre and were referred to Mokhada Rural Hospital, and finally to Nashik Civil Hospital—where Avita sadly delivered a stillborn baby girl.
Father had to carry daughter's body in a bag
After the delivery, Sakharam Kavar was denied an ambulance to take his daughter's body home and had to travel nearly 90km by bus with her remains in a carry bag.
The hospital said their ambulance was broken down; the family believes this delay cost them their child.
Sakharam also alleged he was assaulted by police when he questioned the delays—claims officials have denied.
The incident highlights ongoing gaps in rural healthcare access and emergency response.
