UFBU bank employees protest in Hubballi for 5-day banking week
Bank employees from the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) hit the streets in Hubballi on Friday, calling for a five-day banking week and action on long-standing demands.
Their protest was held in response to the call for nationwide strike on September 11 by the UFBU.
The five-day week was agreed upon in a March 2024 settlement but still hasn't happened, leaving many workers frustrated.
UFBU seeks pensions and staffing fixes
Union leaders say their main demand has been ignored for nearly two-and-a-half years despite several meetings with government and bank officials.
The Department of Financial Services claims the proposal is "under consideration," but UFBU isn't backing down without real progress.
Besides shorter workweeks, unions are also asking to restore the Old Pension Scheme, update pensions, raise gratuity limits, hire more staff, and cover medical insurance premiums for retirees.
