Vijay announces 3 free LPG cylinders to families annually

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced a new set of welfare measures in the state Assembly. The "Annapoorani Super Six" scheme will provide three free liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders annually to families with an income under ₹2.5 lakh. The scheme is expected to benefit around 1.30 crore families and will be implemented from Pongal 2027 at an annual cost of ₹4,000 crore to the state exchequer.

Scheme announced amid ongoing gas crisis
Vijay announced the scheme in light of the current war situation in the Gulf region, which has led to a shortage of cooking gas cylinders and rising prices.
"Keeping this in mind, even during a financially constrained situation, in order to lighten the financial burden on the public, protect their welfare, and fulfill the promise made to the people, the government has decided to provide them with the amount spent toward cooking gas cylinders," he said.
Travel benefits
Free bus travel for transgender persons
In addition to the LPG cylinder scheme, Vijay also announced free bus travel for transgender persons.
The "Vettri Payana Thittam" scheme for women was also expanded. Women can now travel free on Express, LSS, and Deluxe services as well as inter-district bus services.
The move will cost the state government an additional ₹6,000 crore annually.
Airport controversy
Vijay opposes airport project near Chennai
Vijay also reiterated his government's opposition to the proposed airport at Parandur near Chennai. The project has been opposed by farmers and residents in the area.
He said his government stands with those who would be affected by the airport project and is looking at alternative locations for it.
A new Terminal 5 will be constructed at Chennai's existing Meenambakkam airport instead.
