Visakhapatnam officials plan water conservation as El Nino reduces rainfall
Visakhapatnam is dealing with a tough drinking water shortage, thanks to weak rainfall caused by El Nino.
Local leaders and officials met up on Friday to figure out how to keep taps running until the next monsoon.
They checked reservoir levels and mapped out ways to stretch supplies, so residents aren't left high and dry.
Yeleru supplies 60% with cleaning underway
Most of the city's water (about 60%) comes from the Yeleru system, which is being cleaned out and will soon deliver more flow.
To make things more secure long-term, projects like Purushothapatnam Lift Irrigation Scheme and Polavaram Left Main Canal are in progress, plus efforts like rainwater harvesting and stopping illegal groundwater use.
Complaint system rolling out in Visakhapatnam
A fresh complaint system is rolling out so people can get updates if there's a disruption or need alternative arrangements.
With these moves, officials hope Visakhapatnam will have enough water by June 2027, and be better prepared for future shortages.
