West Bengal: 17 dead in landslides, roads to Sikkim cut-off

India

Heavy rains have triggered deadly landslides in northern West Bengal, leaving at least 17 people dead.
Key roads linking Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Siliguri have collapsed or been blocked, cutting off communities and stranding tourists.
Jalpaiguri district is also struggling with waterlogging and broken embankments, making rescue efforts even tougher.

Bhutan warns of possible floods

With major routes down, evacuations are slow and challenging—rescue teams are using the main open road to get people out.
Locals have been told to stay inside for safety. On top of that, Bhutan has warned about possible floods from an overflowing dam, which could hit already hard-hit areas soon.
Officials in Bhutan are coordinating updates and warnings with authorities in West Bengal.
The Chief Minister is heading to Darjeeling to oversee relief work as heavy rain is expected to continue through October 6.
