How to get duplicate copy of your lost Aadhaar card

After the Supreme Court verdict on Aadhaar Act, it is no longer mandatory to link your Aadhaar with bank or telecom services. But, Aadhaar is still required for availing various government services and welfare schemes, thereby maintaining its relevance as a valid proof of identity. So, if you end up losing your Aadhaar, here's a step-by-step guide on how to get a duplicate copy.

    Procedure to re-issue your Aadhaar

First off, log on to the official UIDAI website. Then, head to 'My Aadhaar' drop-down menu, and click on 'Retrieve Lost or Forgotten EID/UID' link, under the 'Aadhaar services' section. On the next page, enter the required details, viz. name, e-mail, mobile number, and the system-generated security code. Also, specify whether you wish to retrieve the EID (Enrolment number) or the UID (Aadhaar number).

    Final steps

Finally, after entering all the details, click on 'Send OTP' button at the bottom. A one-time password will be sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number. Enter and verify the OTP. Once successfully verified, your Aadhaar number will be sent on your e-mail and mobile number. You can use this UID, in order to get a physical copy of your Aadhaar card.

Clearing the air around Aadhaar status

Post the September 26, 2018 SC verdict on Aadhaar relating to authentication of Aadhaar, there has been quite a lot of confusion with respect to services where Aadhaar is necessary. Aadhaar is no longer mandatory for services such as bank account, telecom services, and school admissions/entrance tests. However, it is still necessary for getting a PAN, filing I-T returns, and availing government welfare schemes.
