WHO report shows India has nearly 64% exclusive breastfeeding rate
India
On World Breastfeeding Protection Day, WHO's new report shows India is doing well in supporting exclusive breastfeeding.
Countries that stick to the global code for marketing breast-milk substitutes see much higher rates: India's numbers jumped from 55% in 2015-16 to almost 64% between 2019-21 for babies under six months.
Global exclusive breastfeeding reaches 48%
In South Asia, Bangladesh leads, with India close behind and China much lower at 29%.
Globally, more countries are following the code now: 37 compared to just 25 in 2020.
Exclusive breastfeeding rates worldwide have climbed to 48%, almost hitting the World Health Assembly target of 50%.
WHO and UNICEF hope to push this up to 60% by 2030.
