You can now sell your EV battery power back to grid

India

Kerala just rolled out a new rule: if you own an electric vehicle, you can now sell your unused battery power back to the grid during peak hours—at ₹10 per unit.
All you need is access to an authorized V2G (vehicle-to-grid) charging station.

How this will help

This move could be a game-changer for clean energy. By letting EVs both take from and give back to the grid, Kerala hopes to ease electricity demand spikes and boost renewable energy use.
The rules are in place until March 2030, and they're designed to make it easier for everyone—from EV drivers to charging station operators—to get involved.

Ongoing pilot studies

Kerala has already been testing V2G tech with top institutes like IIT Bombay, working out how it'll work in real life.
The final guidelines will be based on pilot studies conducted by the distribution licensee or assigned agencies.
The message seems clear: Kerala wants more people driving EVs—and helping power their state at the same time.
