National Sports Day is celebrated annually on August 29 to highlight the importance of sports and physical activities in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The day was first observed in 2012, making it a relatively new addition to India's calendar of observances. The date was chosen to honor hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand's birthday, who was born in Allahabad in 1905.
