Projects around the world that can tackle air pollution
Air Pollution is a rising cause of concern around the world, especially in India with cities like Delhi battling a thick layer of smog that has blanketed its skyline. While the city may adopt cloud seeding as a technique to improve its air quality index, some other incredible projects exist in the world that it can learn from and adopt.
The Nanjing Vertical Forest
This project was first practiced in China's Jiangsu province wherein Asia's biggest vertical forest was built to overcome air pollution. As per sources, the vertical forest was designed to produce 60 kg of oxygen every day and came out to be an incredible environmental solution as it purified air and promoted greenery. Made up of 3,000 plants, it absorbed 25 tons of carbon dioxide.
Generating fuel from pollutants
Through research conducted by the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven, scientists uncovered a groundbreaking method that not only purifies the air but also harnesses pollutants to generate hydrogen fuel. Their system involves a solar-powered device equipped with a thin membrane. One side operates an air purification system, while the other transforms these contaminants into hydrogen, utilizing their degenerated form for sustainable fuel production.
The CityTree Project
A German startup named Green City Solutions came up with an innovative way to tackle air pollution called CityTree, the concept of which was based on creating more green spaces. The folks created a vertical, billboard-like unit and placed several mosses and lichens. With that, each unit could absorb 240 tons of carbon dioxide, which is equal to the job of 275 trees.
The Air-Ink Project
Air-Ink Project involves making ink from carbon emissions. Founded by Graviky Labs, this process involves capturing the emissions, separating carbon from these emissions, and then mixing the carbon with different oils or solutions to make ink. This purifies the air and at the same time, gives us something to use creatively. Per sources, a single Air Ink pen contains 30-50 minutes of air pollution.
