    What's the story

    The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to construct two-three storey public toilets to overcome space constraint in the metropolis.

    The BMC intends to spend Rs. 376cr to construct over 18,000 public toilet blocks in 2018.

    In addition, the BMC is planning to complete the tender process by the end of this year; the work will start by January 15, 2018.

    Multi-storey toilets will have these features

    According to the project, the BMC aims to provide one toilet seat for every 50 people, on an average.

    Special attention will be given to the requirements of senior citizens, children, and handicapped people.

    The BMC will construct septic tanks for multi-storey toilets wherever, it is not feasible to connect the lavatories to sewage lines.

    Plan

    What does the new plan state?

    According to the plan, several old and shabby toilets will be pulled down and replaced with new structures using improved design.

    Further, the civic body will demolish old 11,170 toilets and make 15,774 new ones in that space. Remaining 3,044 toilets would be completely new.

    The city currently has approximately 12,000 public toilets, and many of them are over a decade old.
