Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia has stepped down from the post of the Congress General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh West, taking responsibility for the party's poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections this year. Interestingly, the news of the former Guna MP's resignation comes only a day after several reports claimed that he may succeed Rahul Gandhi as the next Congress President. Here's more.

Scindia was appointed as the General Secretary of All India Congress Committee (AICC) for UP (West) in January this year. In a tweet, he stated, "Accepting the people's verdict and taking accountability, I had submitted my resignation as general secretary of AICC to Rahul Gandhi. I thank him for entrusting me with this responsibility and for giving me the opportunity to serve our party."

Scindia lost his traditional Guna seat to BJP's KP Yadav

Before the General Elections, Gandhi had appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with Scindia, as the Congress party's in-charges to revive the party in Uttar Pradesh, which has the most number of seats in Lok Sabha. However, Scindia himself lost his traditional Guna seat in Madhya Pradesh to BJP's KP Yadav by a margin of over 1.25 lakh in the LS polls.

The news of Scindia's resignation emerged barely hours after Mumbai Congress President Milind Deora quit on Sunday. After Rahul Gandhi's resignation as the Congress President, following his party's disastrous performance in the General Elections, several leaders resigned from their party posts. Gandhi announced he was stepping down from the post on May 25, two days after the results of the Lok Sabha polls.
