Kamal Nath: News

Kamal Nath is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC), former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and the Leader of Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly as of 2021. He did his schooling at The Doon School, where he became friends with Sanjay Gandhi, who was the scion of India’s Nehru-Gandhi family. He did his BCom from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Nath was elected as the Lok Sabha MP from Chhindwara constituency successively in 1980, 1984, 1989 and 1991. He served as Minister of State (MoS) for Environment & Forests (1991-95) and MoS for Textiles (1995-96) in the PV Narasimha Rao Government. Nath was again elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014, becoming a nine-time MP. During the UPA regime, he served as Minister of Commerce and Industry (2004-09), Minister of Urban Development (2011-1), and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs (2012-14). In the 2018 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, Nath, along with Jyotiraditya Scindia led Congress to victory, ending BJP’s 15-year reign. Nath became the CM in 2018, serving till 2020, when Scindia rebelled and joined the BJP with his loyalists, thereby bringing down the state government. In 2020, BJP’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan again took over as the CM.
