What's the story

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the 2025 Delhi assembly elections, ending the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) decade-long rule. The BJP is set to return to power in Delhi after over 27 years, leading in 47 out of the 70 constituencies according to election commission data. Meanwhile, AAP could only lead in 23 constituencies and lost heavily including former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's seat.

Online reaction

Congress's defeat sparks online humor, political introspection

The Congress party was crushed, not winning a single seat and continuing its decade-long absence from Delhi's politics. The result has sparked a meme fest and satirical commentary on social media, especially aimed at Congress and its spokespersons for their pathetic performance. "Aryabhatta discovered the number of seats won by the Congress," read one meme.

Political introspection

INDIA bloc leaders discuss missed alliance opportunities

The election results have also sparked conversations among leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc over missed opportunities for collaboration. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah regretted the lack of a pre-poll alliance between Congress and AAP, saying it could have possibly prevented BJP's win. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut agreed, saying, "Had Congress and AAP been together, the results may have been different."

Alliance dynamics

Congress's role in 'disunity' and AAP's internal conflicts

Notably, INDIA bloc leaders have also slammed the Congress for causing "disunity" among alliance partners. Communist Party of India leader D Raja stressed that Congress needs to introspect on strengthening the INDIA bloc going ahead. Further, many social media users feel AAP's downfall is tied to infighting, especially a rift between Kejriwal and Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal who campaigned against Kejriwal despite not contesting in these elections.
