Bypoll results: BJP wins in Nagrota, MNF in Mizoram's Dampa
What's the story
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Devyani Rana has won the Nagrota Assembly constituency by-election in Jammu district. She secured 42,350 votes in the final round of counting, defeating her nearest rival Harsh Dev Singh of the Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party, by a margin of 24,522 votes. National Conference candidate Shamim Begum finished third with just over 10,000 votes. Harsh Dev Singh received 17,661 votes.

The by-election was necessitated after the death of Devyani's father, veteran politician Devinder Singh Rana. The seat has been a BJP bastion since 2014 but has also been held by the National Conference in the past. The Nagrota bypoll was held on November 11 with a voter turnout of over 75%. This is slightly lower than the 77.66% recorded during the 2024 Assembly elections.

In Mizoram, the Dampa seat was won by Mizo National Front (MNF)'s R Lalthangliana, who defeated his nearest rival, Vanlalsailova of the ruling Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), by a margin of 562 votes. The Dampa seat became vacant after the death of incumbent MNF legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21. In the last assembly elections, conducted in November 2023, Sailo defeated his nearest opponent, Vanlalsailova, by a margin of 292.
