Explained: SP MLA's remark on rising Muslim population sparks controversy
A political controversy erupted in Uttar Pradesh after Samajwadi Party MLA Mehboob Ali stated that the Muslim population is growing and the Bharatiya Janata Party's rule will soon end. Speaking at a public event in Bijnor, the Amroha MLA remarked, "Your rule will come to an end...population of Muslims is increasing. We will come to power...In 2027, you will surely go...we will come." His comments have sparked a heated debate as the state prepares for the 2027 Assembly elections.
Ali's comments draw sharp response from BJP
Ali's comments have sparked a strong reaction from the BJP. Subrat Pathak, a former MP and BJP general secretary in Uttar Pradesh, questioned the Samajwadi Party's stance. He asked, "Is this why (Samajwadi Party chief) Akhilesh Yadav is busy dividing Hindus? So that a particular community's wish is fulfilled?" He added "The Hindus have made Narendra Modi the Prime Minister for the third time and Yogi Adityanath the Chief Minister for two terms."
SP leader Sunil Sajan responds to controversy
SP leader Sunil Sajan distanced the party from Ali's remarks about the BJP's defeat due to an increase in the Muslim population. "But it is true that inflation, unemployment, BJP's corruption, their lies, and politics of hate have increased... the borders are not secure, states are burning, and the Prime Minister is silent. A large population now wants to see the BJP defeated. So the BJP is not here for long," he stated.
