Vote counting for Maharashtra and Jharkhand underway
Mahayuti dominates in Maharashtra; INDIA bloc prevails in Jharkhand
That's all for today from the high-stakes political battles in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
The Mahayuti Alliance, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, is on track for a commanding return to power. The BJP alone crossed the 100-seat mark, solidifying its position as the largest party in the state. This victory highlights the alliance's broad-based appeal and its ability to overcome challenges from the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi.
In a dramatic turnaround, the INDIA bloc, led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) under Hemant Soren, secured 44 seats, successfully holding off the BJP-led NDA, which managed 33 seats. This victory cements Soren's leadership and marks a decisive moment for the bloc in the state’s political landscape.
Highlight: Priyanka's electoral debut
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra marked her electoral debut with a resounding win in the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypolls, securing an overwhelming margin of over 4.1 lakh votes.
This victory not only reinforces Wayanad's reputation as a Congress bastion but also makes Priyanka the third member of the Gandhi family to hold a parliamentary seat.
Rahul Gandhi, vacated Wayanad after retaining Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, and Sonia Gandhi is currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member.
Priyanka's victory against CPI’s Sathyan Mokeri and BJP’s Navya Haridas is expected to bolster Congress’s standing in Kerala and influence its prospects in the southern political landscape significantly.
Recap: UP bypoll results
Nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, including constituencies like Ghaziabad, Karhal, and Phulpur, were contested on November 20. While these bypolls will not affect the overall composition of the 403-member Assembly, they mark a significant showdown between the BJP and the Samajwadi Party (SP) since the general elections earlier this year.
As per ECI website, BJP+ was leading in seven seats, and SP in the other two.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spearheaded a vigorous campaign to strengthen BJP's voter support, while SP leader Akhilesh Yadav expressed optimism about his party's chances, asserting that the results would favor the SP.
However, the bypolls were not without controversy. SP accused the BJP of exploiting administrative resources to influence voter turnout, and incidents of voter suppression were reported. As a result, five police officers faced suspension, highlighting tensions during the polling process.
Recap: Jharkhand assembly results solidify JMM's position
In a significant turnaround, the INDIA bloc, led by Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), has successfully countered the BJP-led NDA's challenge in the Jharkhand Assembly elections. The alliance has secured 44 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 41, while the NDA has managed 33 seats.
With the JMM emerging as the leading force, Hemant Soren is poised to return as Chief Minister. This victory not only solidifies his leadership but also sets the stage for him to potentially complete a full, uninterrupted term in office. It marks a decisive moment for the JMM, underscoring its ability to maintain its political ground despite challenges.
Recap: After Mahayuti's big win, question looms on CM face
The Mahayuti alliance is set to reclaim power in Maharashtra, with the coalition crossing the majority mark by a significant margin.
The BJP has alone crossed the 100-seats mark
Now the question of who will assume the Chief Minister's role remains.
Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis assured there was no conflict over the chief ministership, stating that Mahayuti leaders would collectively decide on the matter. Addressing the media, Fadnavis said the overwhelming victory reflected strong support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also expressed gratitude to women voters for their contribution.
Fadnavis criticized the Opposition's campaign tactics, saying, “The Opposition’s efforts to propagate a fake narrative and polarize voters based on religion was foiled by the masses.”
Significance of 2024 Jharkhand polls
In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP, despite a robust campaign driven by the Modi wave, faced a major defeat, managing only 25 seats. Meanwhile, the JMM-Congress alliance achieved a decisive majority, marking a pivotal shift in Jharkhand’s political dynamics and underscoring the opposition's growing influence in the state.
Significance of 2024 Maharashtra polls
This was the first election after splits in the NCP and the Shiv Sena. In the 2019 elections, BJP won 105 seats, the undivided Shiv Sena 56, undivided NCP 54, Congress 44, independents 13 and others 16 seats. The results today will have huge implications for all the parties, particularly NCP and Shiv Sena.
Uddhav Thackeray lost his chief ministerial position due to a split in his party in 2022 and the party has been keen to prove a point in the assembly polls. His key rival Eknath Shinde also gained popularity due to welfare measures of the Mahayuti government. And now there is a seeming clash over who is the true inheritor of Balasaheb Thackeray's legacy. The trends so far show Eknath Shinde has trumped the Thackerays.
The NCP also suffered a split with Ajit Pawar joining the ruling alliance as Deputy Chief Minister in July last year. His uncle Sharad Pawar kept a tight campaign and has been keen to see that there is no dent to his long legacy in politics.
