How AI can help improve telecom networks in India
What's the story
Neeraj Mittal, the Telecom Secretary of India, has said that artificial intelligence (AI) will play a major role in making telecom networks self-healing and improving customer services. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress 2025, he emphasized the need for an organized response to the rapidly changing technological landscape. The government is working with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to see how AI and telecom developments can be harmonized for good.
Technological evolution
Transitioning from generative AI to agentic AI
Mittal highlighted the huge potential of AI in improving network intelligence as we transition from 5G to 6G. He said, "There is a tremendous role for AI to improve the intelligence in the networks, make them self-healing." He also talked about moving from generative AI to agentic AI, where many functions would be replaced by AI deep within and at various levels of the network.
Future plans
Mittal's caution on AI misuse
Telecom industry players expect 6G trials to start in 2028, with commercial deployment taking some more time. This indicates a long-term plan for the adoption of this advanced technology. However, Mittal also cautioned against the potential misuse of AI, saying there is a need to remain vigilant about its use in technology.
Security concerns
Deepfakes, voice cloning, financial fraud
Mittal expressed concerns over how AI-aided tools are being used for deepfakes, voice cloning, and financial fraud. He said these technologies can bypass voice signatures and even videos to establish identities. "We have to be very vigilant about what the telecom network will look like with artificial intelligence," he added.
