These 5 new satellite features are coming to iPhone
What's the story
Apple is said to be developing a suite of new satellite connectivity features for its iPhones, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported. The tech giant is said to be working on an API that would let third-party developers integrate satellite connections into their apps. However, the implementation will depend on app makers and not all features/services may work with this system.
Feature upgrades
Improvements to Apple Maps and satellite messaging
Apple is also working on bringing satellite connectivity into Apple Maps, allowing users to navigate without a SIM card or Wi-Fi. The company is also said to be improving its satellite messaging system, possibly allowing users to send photos instead of just text messages. These developments are part of Apple's ongoing efforts to improve its emergency satellite services first introduced with the iPhone 14 in 2022.
Connectivity enhancements
Indoor satellite connectivity and 5G NTN support
Apple is also working on a way to improve indoor satellite connectivity. This would mean users could stay connected even when their iPhone is in a pocket, car, or indoors. The company is also said to be planning to support 5G NTN with the iPhone 18 series. This would let cell towers tap into satellites for better coverage on the iPhone.
Infrastructure upgrades
Globalstar considering sale to SpaceX
Apple currently uses Globalstar's satellite network for its iPhone features. However, Globalstar is said to be considering a sale with Elon Musk's SpaceX as a potential buyer. Most of the new features Apple is working on would need major upgrades to Globalstar's satellite infrastructure. The current plan is to "own a core set of features and offer them at no cost," while advanced capabilities could come at a price through carriers like SpaceX.
Service speculation
Potential launch of Apple's own satellite service
There have been talks within Apple about launching its own satellite service, but fears of the company acting like a carrier have held it back. If SpaceX buys Globalstar, the necessary upgrades for these new features could be rolled out faster. Notably, Apple has no plans to offer phone calls, video calls, or web browsing via satellite as of now.
