Archeologists find ancient treasures under Thailand's oldest reclining Buddha statue
Archeologists in Thailand just uncovered 33 gold, silver, and bronze treasures hidden beneath the country's oldest reclining Buddha statue at Wat Thammachak Sema Ram temple.
The sandstone statue, stretching 43 feet long, dates back to around 657 CE—making it about 1,300 years old and a rare piece from the ancient Dvaravati period.
Artifacts were found in a clay pot
The artifacts—gold rings, silver earrings, bronze jewelry—were found in a clay pot about four feet underground.
Among the finds, repousse plaques feature detailed images of Buddha in teaching poses, including one gold plaque showing him giving spiritual instruction (vitarka mudra).
These were likely left as ritual offerings and show off the impressive artistry and devotion of that era.
Discovery helps connect today's culture with Thailand's deep Buddhist roots
Thailand's Fine Arts Department and Phimai National Museum are now working to protect these fragile items and study them further.
This discovery isn't just cool history—it helps connect today's culture with Thailand's deep Buddhist roots.
