What's the story

Dream Sports, the parent company of fantasy sports platform Dream11, has announced the open-sourcing of its technology engine. The move comes with the launch of HorizonOS, a software that will be part of Dream Sports' new Software as a Service (SaaS) business called Horizon. The announcement was made by Amit Garde, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Dream11 and CEO of Horizon.

Launch event

HorizonOS to be unveiled at MumbaiHacks 2025

HorizonOS will be officially launched at MumbaiHacks 2025, an AI hackathon scheduled for November 28 and 29 in Mumbai. The move comes as Dream Sports looks to diversify its offerings after a recent online gaming law disrupted its core business model. "Open-source software forms the backbone of global innovation," Garde said, adding that with HorizonOS, they are giving back to the community that helped them operate at such scale.

Developer support

HorizonOS to provide essential tools for developers

HorizonOS will offer a range of functionalities, from tools that help developers build, test and deploy faster, to core building blocks for application development. It also provides systems that allow these applications to run and be managed at scale. Over the past decade, Dream11 has grown rapidly with over 300 million users and peak traffic comparable to some of the world's largest real-time digital platforms.

Sectoral impact

HorizonOS to support diverse sectors

The initiative will support start-ups and small businesses across a wide range of sectors, including e-commerce, fintech, and healthtech. "All software applications require some foundational capabilities," Garde said. He added that they are making these building blocks available for individual developers, start-ups and MSMEs so they can focus on their core product proposition.

Open-source evolution

Dream11's open-source journey and future aspirations

Dream11 started its open-source journey with early contributions to projects like React Native, Kong, and Vert.x. With HorizonOS, it hopes to advance India's open-source ecosystem and strengthen local technological capabilities. The initiative also supports India's efforts toward building self-reliant digital capabilities for its vision of digital sovereignty.
