Google could face massive EU fine over Play Store rules

Technology

Google's in hot water with the European Union and could face a huge fine in the first quarter of 2026 if it doesn't make bigger changes to its Play Store.
The EU says Google's still making it tough for app developers to point users to cheaper deals outside the Play Store, despite new rules meant to level the playing field.

What did Google actually do?

After getting called out in March 2025, Google set up a system where developers can promote outside offers.
But EU regulators say that's not enough—especially compared to Apple, which made bigger changes after getting hit with a €500 million fine.
If Google doesn't step up, the EU could slap them with a penalty worth up to 10% of their global revenue (yeah, that's billions).

Why does this matter?

This isn't just tech drama—it could affect how much you pay for apps and what choices you get as a user, according to consumer advocates.
Google says further changes could put Android and Play users at risk of malware, scams, and data theft, but the EU is standing firm: full compliance or big consequences.
