Google Messages has changed how links appear on Android
What's the story
Google is revamping the way links and YouTube previews are displayed in its Messages app for Android. The previous design showed the sent URL at the top, followed by an image preview, page title, description, and domain. However, this new update hides the original link if there's nothing else in the message. It also features a taller cover image with less cropping for better visibility.
Design improvements
Enhanced readability and visual elements in link previews
The redesigned link previews come with a more prominent background and a larger title, making it easier to read. The domain is now displayed with its favicon, adding a visual element to the preview. However, it's worth noting that the useful page snippet has been removed in this redesign. When a link is accompanied by text, the preview may be narrower to fit the length of the message.
Customization options
User preferences and YouTube link handling
For users who prefer seeing the full URL and don't need previews, they can go to Messages settings > Automatic previews and turn off "Show all previews" or "Show only web link previews." The other option is long-pressing and copying to see the link. As for YouTube links, tapping on them opens the video in Google Messages' picture-in-picture player, but there's no direct way to open it inside the YouTube app.
Update rollout
Beta version and future tweaks
The new link previews are available in the latest Google Messages beta (version 20251121_00_RC01) released this week. While the redesign looks visually appealing, some users have pointed out that it is less functional. There are hopes for tweaks before a wider rollout of this update.
