What's the story

Google has unveiled a new real-time scam detection feature for its Pixel smartphones in India. The innovative tool, powered by Gemini Nano AI, is designed to protect users from the growing threat of scam calls and help them identify suspicious conversations before they fall prey. The announcement was made at the company's 'Safe and Trusted AI' event, amid rising concerns over fraudulent phone activity across the country.

Functionality

AI tool to analyze calls on-device

The new scam detection feature will use the power of Gemini Nano AI to analyze calls on-device. It will analyze incoming calls from unknown numbers and alert users if the conversation shows signs of fraud. Google has clarified that this feature will be off by default, giving users full control over when they want it enabled. A subtle beep will notify both parties during the call if the feature is active, and users can switch it off at any time.

Privacy assurance

No recording or transcripts for user privacy

Google has also assured that the real-time call detection feature won't record audio or send transcripts to Google, keeping user data private. The feature is specifically designed to protect vulnerable groups such as children, teens, and the elderly who are often targeted by scammers.

Additional protection

New safety feature to prevent financial fraud

Along with scam call detection, Google has introduced another safety feature for Pixel phones in India. It warns users against financial fraud during live interactions. If a user is sharing their screen and opens apps such as Google Pay or Paytm while talking to an unknown caller, Pixel phones will show warnings. This friction-free alert will let users end the call or stop screen sharing with just one tap, effectively breaking real-time social engineering attempts.

Future plans

Enhanced phone number verification in the works

Google is also working on Enhanced Phone Number Verification (ePNV), a secure sign-in technology that replaces SMS-based OTPs with SIM-based verification done directly on the device. The system works over both Wi-Fi and mobile data and aims to combat OTP-related fraud, another common threat in India. These measures are part of Google's broader commitment to strengthening digital safety for all users, especially those navigating India's rapidly expanding online ecosystem.
