AI boosts creativity, doesn't endanger creators: Mosseri on MrBeast's concerns
What's the story
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, has responded to concerns raised by popular creator MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on content creation. At a Bloomberg Screentime conference this week, Mosseri acknowledged that AI could change who can be creative by enabling people who weren't creators before to produce content at a certain quality and scale. However, he also admitted that bad actors could use this technology for nefarious purposes.
AI impact
Will AI replicate MrBeast's content?
MrBeast had recently warned that AI-generated videos could threaten creators' livelihoods, saying it was "scary times" for the industry. However, Mosseri disagreed with this notion, saying most creators won't use AI tech to replicate what MrBeast has done with his elaborate productions. Instead, he believes it will enable creators to improve their content quality and quantity.
Content production
AI's potential to reduce content production costs
Mosseri drew a parallel between the internet's impact on publishing and AI's potential to reduce content production costs. He said, "What the internet did... was allow almost anyone to become a publisher by reducing the cost of distributing content to essentially zero." He added that generative AI models appear poised to do something similar for content production.
AI integration
Blurring lines between organic and synthetic content
Mosseri also noted the existence of a lot of "hybrid" content on major social platforms today, where creators use AI in their workflow but don't create fully synthetic content. He said this trend will continue, and the line between organic and synthetic content will blur even more in the future.
Labeling challenges
Need for better AI content labeling
Mosseri admitted that Meta's AI content labeling system needs more work. He said the company's initial attempts to automatically label AI content resulted in real content being labeled as AI because Adobe and other tools were used in the process. He stressed that while Meta has a responsibility to identify what content is AI-generated, it should also provide more context for people to make informed decisions.
Societal shift
Society needs to adapt to new reality
Mosseri stressed that society itself needs to adapt to the changing digital landscape. He said kids today need to be taught that just because they see a video of something, it doesn't mean it actually happened. This is a departure from his own childhood, when seeing a video was an assumption of capturing real-world moments.
