JioHotstar bets on content commerce with in-app shopping
What's the story
JioHotstar, the popular streaming service from Reliance Industries, has ventured into content commerce. The new addition allows users to discover and purchase products featured in movies or shows without leaving the platform. Akash Ambani announced this development at Reliance Industries' 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM) earlier today.
Feature details
A seamless transition from content to commerce
Ambani said this the first time ever that "a marketplace is created on an entertainment platform, where you can shop while you watch without leaving your favorite content." The capability allows users to transition from discovering content to making purchases within the JioHotstar ecosystem. By tapping a shopping button while watching a movie or show, viewers can instantly access products seen in a scene.
Tech integration
AI at the core of content commerce
The new feature leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze scenes in real time, identify products appearing on screen, and display pricing, retailer information, and alternative options for viewers. This seamless integration of shopping into the viewing experience is a major step forward in content consumption. The announcement of content commerce was part of a larger demonstration of new consumer experiences and tech initiatives across JioHotstar and JioStar's media ecosystem.
Market performance
Dominance in viewership and downloads
JioStar retained its position as the number one player in television entertainment with a 34.7% share of viewership. Meanwhile, JioHotstar continued to grow its digital footprint, averaging 451 million monthly active users over the year. It also became the first Indian paid OTT service to cross one billion downloads.
