What's the story

Kerala has launched a new initiative, the 'Cyber Safety Protocol 2026,' to tackle the challenges of the artificial intelligence (AI) era. The protocol was launched by the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the tech arm of the state's General Education Department. The framework aims to provide a safe digital learning space and strong cyber protection for students in public schools across Kerala.

Framework

Developed after detailed study of AI-driven challenges

The 'Cyber Safety Protocol 2026' has been developed after a detailed study of the new AI-driven challenges and cybercrimes. It is in line with existing legal frameworks to provide specific guidelines for heads of institutions, teachers, parents, and students. KITE CEO K Anvar Sadath said the initiative has 13 core objectives including creating awareness about risks related to sharing personal information with generative AI platforms.

Implementation

Heads of schools assigned 17 specific tasks

The protocol also outlines nine key operational areas, including academic AI integration and administrative data management. Heads of schools have been assigned 17 specific tasks such as ensuring uninterrupted internet access under teacher supervision during school hours. They are also required to set up dedicated School Cyber Security Committees headed by a designated Coordinator.

Privacy protection

Protocol emphasizes 'Privacy by design' principles

To safeguard student privacy, the protocol emphasizes 'Privacy by Design' principles. It specifically advises against real-time CCTV surveillance through private servers in classrooms. To bridge the digital divide, teachers are advised not to assign homework that requires internet access at home. However, they must offer school-based facilities for students who can't access programs like 'Key to Entrance.'

Safety measures

Provides 25 essential safety measures for students

The protocol provides 25 essential safety measures for students, including recognizing suspicious links and securing live locations and private information on social media. Parents are given 16 actionable guidelines to manage screen time, understand the impact of digital footprints, and use monitoring tools like Family Link. KITE also offers specialized Cyber Security and AI literacy programs for families under this initiative.
