Men's brains shrink faster than women's, study finds
A fresh study from the University of Oslo has found that men's brains lose volume more quickly than women's as they age.
Researchers analyzed over 12,000 brain scans from people aged 17 to 95, focusing on 4,726 healthy individuals, and noticed men had a steeper drop in brain tissue across several areas.
Interestingly, even though men's brains shrink faster, women are still twice as likely to get Alzheimer's.
Need for more research on brain aging
The team tracked changes by comparing scans taken about three years apart.
Men showed a broader decline in total brain size and thickness, but both sexes had similar results in the hippocampus—the part tied to memory and learning.
The researchers say we need more studies focused on these differences so we can better understand how our brains age.
