Google Maps now shows real-time speed limits in Noida
What's the story
In a major step toward improving road safety, the Noida authorities have integrated Google Maps with real-time speed limits. The system was virtually launched by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna, making it the first such implementation in the state. The initiative is being carried out by the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate in association with Google India and Lepton Software Export & Research Pvt Ltd.
Feature details
How the system works
The new system will show the legal speed limit for every road stretch on Google Maps, along with the user's real-time driving speed. This way, drivers can immediately know if they're within the permissible limit or not. The technology is based on information collected and verified by Noida Traffic Police and mapped through Google and Lepton Software. Once synced, this data updates in real time on Google Maps for accurate speed details.
Goal
Aiming to reduce road accidents
The main aim of this initiative is to reduce overspeeding, a major cause of road accidents. The authorities believe that real-time visibility of speed limits on a widely used app like Google Maps will encourage better compliance without the need for constant on-ground enforcement. The feature is expected to be expanded gradually to cover more routes and intersections across Noida.
Launch details
Google officials at the event
The launch event was attended by senior officials of the police commissionerate as well as Google executives like Roli Agrawal, Google Partnership Leader - India, and Nobel Preet Singh from the Google Maps team. Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh said overspeeding is still the most common cause of road accidents. She added that by showing real-time speed and limits on navigation apps, drivers can self-regulate for their own safety and that of others.
