Reddit tries out gray checkmarks for verified profiles

Technology

Reddit is testing gray checkmarks next to usernames to help users spot real people and official businesses, especially during big announcements.
This move is all about making things clearer and safer on the platform, as misinformation and AI scams become more common.
To get verified, you need to be an active Redditor—it's totally voluntary.

How it works (and what it doesn't do)

Right now, only a small group of self-identified users and businesses with official badges are getting the checkmark.
Unlike other social apps that charge for verification, Reddit's version replaces the old "official" label—no payment needed.
Verified users don't get any special perks or extra access to data, so your privacy stays protected.
For now, you can't request a checkmark; Reddit's keeping things limited while they test it out.
