Reliance Industries to start producing solar modules by year end
Reliance Industries has announced plans to initiate the production of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules by the end of 2024. The announcement was made by Chairman Mukesh Ambani, during the company's 47th annual general meeting (AGM). He also revealed that the first phase of RIL's integrated solar production facilities is set for completion in the upcoming quarters.
Integrated solar production facilities: A closer look
The integrated solar production facilities of RIL will include modules, cells, glass, wafer, ingot, and polysilicon. These facilities are designed with an initial annual capacity of 10GW. Ambani stated that the company's giga-factory is ready for modular expansion at "minimal cost and in the shortest time possible," indicating a strategic approach toward scalability in this new venture.
RIL's technological advancements in solar panel production
RIL has fully integrated and indigenized the HJT technology from REC Singapore, a wholly-owned subsidiary, to develop first Gen bifacial solar panels with cell efficiency exceeding 26%. This integration signifies a significant step toward self-reliance in the production of advanced solar panels. Ambani also highlighted that the firm has significantly enhanced its R&D capabilities by establishing a state-of-the-art prototyping, testing, and validation lab in India.
RIL's future plans for solar technology development
In addition to its existing facilities, RIL has expanded the Advanced Solar Technology Lab in Singapore. These developments are expected to pave the way for cost reductions and supply chain optimization, as well as efficiency improvements in Gen 1 products. Ambani also revealed plans to commercialize disruptive technologies such as perovskites and back-contact HJT-IBC within the next two years, marking a significant milestone in RIL's solar technology journey.
