Sony faces PS5 billion lawsuit over PlayStation Store prices
Sony is in hot water with a massive £2 billion class-action lawsuit, accused of overcharging 12.2 million UK PlayStation users for digital games and in-game content.
Led by consumer advocate Alex Neill, the case claims Sony's 30% commission on every sale gets pushed onto players, making games pricier than they should be.
The lawsuit covers UK-domiciled PlayStation users who made qualifying digital purchases over a period of about 10 years up to February 2026 (with some limited exceptions); if it succeeds, affected users might get around £162 each.
Sony defends its fees, says they help keep consoles affordable
Sony says its fees are there to help keep consoles affordable and protect users from security risks tied to third-party stores.
The Competition Appeal Tribunal officially kicked off hearings on March 10, 2026, with proceedings expected to last about 10 weeks.
This follows similar legal action against Apple over App Store fees last year.
