What's the story

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will let users make calls using usernames instead of phone numbers. The move is aimed at simplifying the way people connect while keeping their privacy intact. The feature is still in development but will be available in a future update. Once released, users would be able to search for usernames directly from the Calls tab.

Search mechanism

How it will work

When a user enters a username in the search bar, WhatsApp will check its internal systems for an account with that exact identifier. If found, it would appear in the search results list with basic profile information based on privacy settings. From this screen, users can select the account to view limited public details like a profile picture if visible to everyone.

Call initiation

Voice and video calls

Once the desired account is selected, WhatsApp will show options to start a voice or video call directly. All calling features available in regular WhatsApp calls are supported for calls made through usernames. The system has been designed to handle searches quickly and securely, ensuring that no sensitive data is exposed during the lookup, except for information users choose to share publicly.

Security feature

Username key for added privacy

WhatsApp is also planning to provide an optional username key for those who want to add an extra layer of protection against unwanted contact. The username system will be optional, permitting users to continue relying on their phone numbers if they prefer. However, calling users with an active chat/username key will only be possible if you already have an active chat with them or if their username key is enabled, you need to enter the key to initiate a call.

Encryption assurance

End-to-end encryption remains intact

All calls initiated via usernames will continue to be protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption protocol. This means that only the participants involved in the call can hear or see the shared communication. WhatsApp will not have access to the contents of these calls, maintaining its strong privacy standards. The same encryption technology used for existing WhatsApp calls will apply seamlessly to those made through usernames, ensuring their security model isn't compromised by this new feature.
