Windows 11 File Explorer is about to get a speed boost
Technology
Microsoft is testing a new always-on preloading feature for Windows 11's File Explorer, aiming to fix those annoying slow launches.
With this update, File Explorer will open almost instantly—bringing back the quick feel many remember from Windows 10.
The feature is being tested now and should roll out fully by early 2026.
What else is changing?
The preloading option, now in Insider Preview builds, keeps File Explorer ready in memory without eating up much RAM.
You can turn it off anytime in Folder Options if you prefer.
Microsoft's also tweaking the right-click menu with a new "Manage file" flyout and better organization for cloud storage actions—and they're looking for user feedback before making these changes official.
