Xiaomi Redmi 5 launched in India, starts at Rs. 7,999
Xiaomi has launched the Redmi 5 smartphone in India; it will be available via Amazon India, Mi.com and the Mi Home stores from March 20. Redmi 5 starts at Rs. 7,999 for the 2GB RAM/16GB storage variant; 3GB RAM/32GB model will be available for Rs. 8,999 and the 4GB RAM/64GB variant for Rs. 10,999. Here's our roundup.

Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch HD+(720x1440 pixels) 18:9 display which offers 282ppi pixel density, 450-nit peak brightness, 72 percent NTSC color gamut coverage and an eye-protection mode. The smartphone gets a fingerprint sensor on the rear-panel which, Xiaomi says, is built using dual pyrolytic sheet technology for heat dissipation. Redmi 5 will come in four color options- Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold.

In terms of optics, the Redmi 5 sports a 12-MP rear camera with 1.25-micron pixels, f/2.2 aperture, Phase Detection Auto-Focus(PDAF), HDR, and LED flash. On the front, you get a 5-MP camera with an LED selfie light (first on any Redmi smartphone, as per Xiaomi), face recognition, and the Smart Beauty 3.0 app for image enhancement.

The Redmi 5 is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC clocked up to 1.8GHz, paired with Adreno 506 GPU, and 2GB/3GB/4GB of RAM options. In terms of inbuilt storage, you get three options - 16GB/32GB/64GB - which can be expanded via microSD card. The phone also packs a 3,300 mAh battery while running MIUI 9 on top of Android Nougat.
From connectivity to sensors onboard
The Redmi 5 weighs at 157 grams while measuring just 7.7mm in thickness. It is reportedly the slimmest Redmi phone ever. In terms of connectivity, you get 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, 3.5mm audio jack and GPS/ A-GPS. Further, like any modern smartphone, this too comes with several sensors on board including an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, proximity sensor and gyroscope.
