    Barcelona win their 5th Champions league title

     Barcelona win their 5th Champions league title

    Beating Juventus 3-1 in the final, at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Barcelona won their 5th UEFA champions league trophy. The three goals scored came from Rakitic, Suarez and Neymar. The single goal from Juventus was made by Morata. Barca created history by completing a second-ever treble of titles. They won Spain's La Liga and Copa Del Rey along with the CL trophy.

    CL Group Stage winners move to next round

    The early stage of Champion's League (CL) saw 32 clubs across various European countries play in groups of four forming 8 groups from A-H. The top two teams from each group based on points moved to the next stage, the Round of 16. Theses teams included the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Monaco, etc. making a total of 16 teams.

    Match Format of Champions League

    The Group Stage matches happen in a double round-robin format, where each team plays every other team in its group twice - home and away. The Round of 16, QF and SF are knock out matches, played home and away to arrive at the results.

    The QF draw

    The Round of 16 matches eliminated the big English teams like Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal, and dark horses like Monaco and Porto made their way to the QF draw. The QF draw line-up had PSG (FRA) v Barcelona (ESP), Atlético (ESP) v Real Madrid (ESP), Porto (POR) v Bayern Munich (GER) and Juventus (ITA) v Monaco (FRA).

    The QF Results and Semis draw

    Atletico which lost to Real Madrid in the 2013-14 season's final, faced the same opponent this season in QF to lose again. Rest of the QFs had the favorite teams winning the matches. The 4 teams that made their way to the semi finals were-Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Real Madrid. The semi final draw announced Barcelona to play Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to play Juventus.

    Real Madrid and Bayern ousted in the SF

    The semifinals that were played home and away resulted in Real Madrid being knocked out by Juventus and Barcelona beating Bayern Munich. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich entered the tournament as favorites for winning the Champions League. Winning the Champions league would have made it 11 wins in all for Real Madrid which, is already on top for the most number of titles won.

    A treble

    Treble refers to a team winning 3 trophies in single season -the domestic league competition, domestic cup competition and continental cup competition. Apart from Barça (2009 and 2015), there are six other teams to have won the treble.
