Alexander Zverev withdraws from Rotterdam Open 2026: Here's why
What's the story
German tennis star Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the ABN AMRO (Rotterdam) Open 2026. The tournament organizers confirmed his absence on Wednesday. The decision comes after a series of recurring ankle problems for the 28-year-old player. His physio advised him to focus on a thorough recovery before returning to competitive play.
Player's statement
I find it incredibly unfortunate, says Zverev
Expressing his disappointment over the decision, Zverev said, "I find it incredibly unfortunate that I have to make this decision. At the ABN AMRO Open, I was already given a chance as a young player, and that's why I always enjoy returning." He added that due to his ankle history, he has to prioritize recovery and avoid taking risks.
Director's response
We understand his decision here, says tournament director Richard Krajicek
Richard Krajicek, the tournament director, also expressed his understanding of Zverev's decision. He said, "Given his history, we would naturally have liked to see Alexander back on court, but we also understand his decision here." Krajicek recalled the impact of Zverev's previous ankle injury and how everyone still remembers those images.

Zverev's withdrawal from the Rotterdam Open makes him another high-profile player to miss out on the 2026 edition of this ATP 500 tournament. Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz had earlier announced his withdrawal from the same event. Interestingly, Alcaraz won the 2026 Australian Open by defeating Novak Djokovic.
