#2023WorldCup: ICC issues ultimatum to BCCI - Know why
The BCCI has found itself in a pressure situation. The cricket body has been asked by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to either pay USD 23 million (roughly Rs. 160 crore) by 2018 end, or risk losing the hosting rights for the 2023 World Cup. This is in relation to compensation for tax deductions incurred in hosting the 2016 World T20. Here's more.
BCCI was made aware of compensation back in October
Former BCCI head Shashank Manohar, who heads the governing body, wants the Indian cricket board to compensate them. When India hosted the World T20 tourney two years ago, they did not get a waiver from the central or state ministry. In the ICC's board meeting in Singapore in October, the BCCI was made aware of the same.
Here are the ultimatums for BCCI
The BCCI, who is governed by the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA), has a few days left to comply with the demand made by ICC. The ICC has already provided two ultimatums. Firstly, it will deduct the amount from India's revenue share for the ongoing financial year. Secondly, should the BCCI fail to comply, India's right to host the World Cup will fade away.
BCCI asks ICC to share recording
Star TV, which is the official broadcast rights holder of all ICC tournaments, had gone on to deduct taxes before paying the latter for the 2016 World T20. The ICC wants the BCCI to compensate for the same. Meanwhile, the BCCI has asked the ICC to share the recording of any meetings where India had agreed to tax waiver policy.
BCCI has given ICC its own ultimatum
The BCCI was headed by N Srinivasan back then. According to reports, Srini never told the world governing body that the BCCI would agree to pay tax compensation, if it didn't receive waiver from the government. If the ICC fails to share the minutes, then the BCCI will stick to its ground and not make any payment.
